Meet the guys

Matt Starbuck
Co-Owner/Head Brewer

Matt discovered his passion for brewing in 2010. What started as a hobby quickly turned into borderline obsession after recruiting his childhood best friend and fellow northwest Oklahoma native, Brenton, to join in on the fun. The pair graduated from extract batches to all grain very quickly and began tweaking recipes to suit their tastes. Spending hours at a time reading online homebrew forums and commercial brewing books, Matt absorbed all the knowledge he could and put this newfound information into practice.

With a degree in Agribusiness from OSU and a full time career as Operations Manager at Purina Animal Nutrition, Matt worked to balance his career with starting Cross Timbers at the Brewers Union in 2019. Many late nights and weekends were sacrificed to make Cross Timbers successful over a close to three year period before he focused on Cross Timbers full time.  Living in Edmond with his wife, Amy, and two sons, he’s grateful for the sacrifices he was able to make in order to make his dream a reality.

Brenton Johnson
Co-Owner/Head Brewer

Brenton was raised in Shattuck Oklahoma.  He grew up working on the family farm, hunting and fishing, and playing sports.  He moved to Edmond in the spring of 2004, where he still resides with his wife, Tara, and two step children (Ben and Owen). He attended UCO for two years, however, decided that he wanted to pursue something different and started his 15 year career as Oklahoma Branch Manager for Continental Battery.  After long, hard weeks at their respective jobs, Matt and Brenton went to Roughtail for a couple of beers to unwind.  It was then and there that they decided to leave their careers and follow their dreams of opening their own brewery.  And so it is.  After 11 years of home brewing, time spent at the Brewers Union, and build-out of their own spot, they are on the verge of that dream finally coming true!
